With the April 15th tax filing deadline less than 3 weeks away and if you have unanswered tax questions, you may find just the help you need on the Internet.
The best place to begin your search is on the official Internal Revenue Service site - www.irs.gov. Here you can find anything Income Tax associated with topics being broken down as they relate to the individual, business, professional, non-profit plus a few other tax specific categories. The IRS site offers links explaining the various tax laws that you can request be sent to you via regular mail. If you have all of your necessary tax filing papers together, you can get information and links to online tools regarding electronic filing of your taxes using the 1040 or 1040EZ forms. Filing taxes electronically typically results in a faster refund if you are due one. Should you want to mail in your return but don't have the necessary forms, you can download and print forms from the IRS site. Excellent instructions for downloading are given on all of the site pages.
Specific tax questions concerning employers, farmers, international taxpayers, military, seniors or retirees can be found at www.irs.gov/individuals/index.html. This page has a link to FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) where you will find many ordinary questions relating to taxes have already been answered. On the 'individuals' page you also will find a link for downloading various tax publications. These files can be downloaded as a PDF file or viewed as an HTML document. The difference being the PDF file will require you to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer allowing you to scroll through the document somewhat like an online book where everything is in sequence and accessible at the same time. The HTML format will display as a typical web page with links to the different topics so that you have to navigate from one page to another using these links. Note: If you do not have Adobe Reader installed on your computer it is a safe, free download from www.adobe.com/products/reader/.
All information on the IRS web page is available in English and Spanish. If you find the page confusing, there is a search feature as well as a site map that shows all of the major topics with their related categories grouped below the appropriate heading. And if you are wondering if you qualify for an Economic Stimulus check, there is a stimulus package calculator link you can visit to see if you qualify for a check, and if so, how much you can expect to get.
