To buy or not to buy . . . safely. You've looked and looked and decided to make a purchase on the Internet. However, you are wondering. . . "Is it safe to do this over the Internet?" "How secure is my credit card information?" Many web sites that allow you to order on-line will typically use one of the two following methods. The first is an application called a 'Shopping Cart' where you travel through the site and fill your 'cart' with wanted items and then proceed to a 'secure' checkout area where you pay using your credit card. The items are then shipped to you.
The second method is to place an order for an item using an on-line order form. Here you input the requested information - including your credit card information - and send your order on its way via a 'secure' socket area. In any case, whether ordering on the Internet or providing any sensitive personal information, be sure to look for the security indicator (on your screen) while in your browser. This indicator lets you know if the site you are on is secure. The indicator may be an open lock - (unsecured) or closed lock (secured). And, some sites have a message window pop-up to notify you that you are entering a secure area and will ask if you want to continue.

With millions of dollars of commerce being transacted daily on the Internet, security is of great concern and much attention has been paid to make these transactions safe. While sites may display the closed lock or have a logo indicating a secure, hacker safe site, if you are uncomfortable using on-line ordering - don't. Many sites display an '800' number to call. If at all possible, use a land line when calling 800 numbers, especially if you will be giving sensitive information. Wireless connections may be inadvertently picked up by others. You can also print out a completed order form to mail with payment. This conventional snail-mail method of ordering may take a little longer; however, if it makes you more comfortable then it's worth it.
