Last week we talked about the My Computer function and how to access it. Today we will talk about some of the System Tasks available through My Computer. System Tasks allow you to View your computer system, Add or Remove programs, and Change Setting within your computer.
From My Computer select System Tasks. This will open a tabbed menu box displaying the information available. All of these tabs will either give you information about your computer, allow you to schedule tasks or make system changes. Typical tabs with a brief description follow. General: defines the system you are using along with support and manufacture information relating to the processor, RAM and GigaHertz. Computer Name: allows you to assign a name and user to the computer for Networking purposes. Hardware: contains information relating to the peripheral hardware you are using on your computer. From here you can also manage the devices and their drivers. System Restore: can monitor your computer and possibly reverse harmful changes or errors by restoring your computer's hard drive to a past date's configuration. Automatic Updates: tracks updates on your computer allowing you to schedule and manage them. Remote: allows remote access to the computer as designated by the current user.
The Add or Remove program function once opened will propagate a list of the programs in your computer. If you are adding a program you will select the 'Add Program' from the menu and follow the prompts to install. If you are deleting a program, you will select the program from the list shown on screen, highlight it and follow the prompts to delete.
The link to Change a Setting offers the ability to change the way you view and use the computer. From the Change a Setting link you can set up the security features on your computer such as firewalls. Internet settings can be added or changed and for those with special needs, accessibility can be addressed. From here you can also access the printers and other hardware being used. This means that you can manage game controllers, the mouse, your keyboard, phone, modems, scanners and cameras.
Learning to use My Computer allows you to manage and use your computer efficiently and effectively. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with its many functions.
