With the holidays upon us, my thoughts this time of year turn to all the wonderful food I'm going to get to eat. Family get-togethers, visiting relatives and company parties can all wreck havoc on your diet.
If you follow calories in food, there are a lot of sites on the Net that will give you the number of calories in a food. Some like www.acaloriecounter.com allow you to type in the name of the food and perform a 'search'. For example, if you were to type in 'French Toast', you would be presented with a list of various preparations of French toast. These variations would include store-bought (frozen), home-made, and the fast-food versions. From this list you select the appropriate link which will take you to another page where you can select the measurement (grams, ounces, etc.) and serving size. This site will then calculate not only the number of calories, but also fat, cholesterol, sodium, plus a host of other ingredients in that food.
Another very good site is www.calorie-counter.net. This web site lists out categories of foods from cereals to drinks and everything in between. Select the category you want to view. You'll then get a list of links to choose from. I selected cereal and got a list of 104 cereals that included all the name brand cereals on the market. I clicked on the cereal I wanted and was taken to a page with all of the information relevant to that product. Again information included calories, protein, fat, sugar, vitamins, and minerals.
There are numerous web sites out there to help with weight control, cooking, and anything else you might want regarding calories, food and the holidays. While most of these websites are free, you may find you will need to register with some to have access to their databases. And, if you are looking for the calories in a specific food, type in its name . . . for example: 'calories in eggnog'.
Final thought… should you have a question about food preparation, product ingredients or quality control, you can find the '800' numbers for most companies at www.anywho.com.
